Theoretical Physics Research Group

1. Introduction

Theoretical Physics Research Group (TPG) is involved with research in quantum optics, quantum information processing, computational biophysics and nonlinear photonic crystal fibers

Quantum optics is the field of research that focuses on the quantum statistics of the electromagnetic field and quantum phenomena in the light-matter interaction. These studies hold keys to technological advances in light sources, sensors, and communication systems. Quantum optics also provides a fertile testing ground for many ideas and possible implementations of quantum information processing. Computational biophysics is at the frontier of computational sciences, physical sciences, and life sciences. By using physical principles to uncover the biological mechanisms at an atomistic level, this field addresses questions such as the molecular origin of diseases and the pharmaceutical drug - disease intervention mechanisms. Photonic crystal fibers is a new generation of optical fibers that allows for a huge flexibility on choosing the location of the zero dispersion wavelength. Thanks to their ability to confine light, photonic crystal fibers can be applied in fiber-lasers, supercontinua sources, fiber-optic communications, high power transmission and other areas.

2. Mission and vision

Our mission is to actively pursue research and to make significant contributions in the areas of quantum optics, quantum information processing, computational biophysics and supercontinuum generation.

3. Research topics

a) Quantum optics and quantum information processing: Spontaneous decay in the presence of absorbing and dispersing dielectrics, van der Waals interactions, entanglement detection criteria, anonymous broadcast networks.

b) Computational biophysics: Anti-cancer drug design, interactions between small molecules and proteins involving in hepatitis C virus and Ebola virus, structural predictions of bacteriocins.

c) Nonlinear photonic crystal fibers: supercontinuum generation, ultrafast phenomena.
